Overview

Act as a general-assignment photojournalist, capturing still images for Crosscut’s daily news feed, plus photo essays and special projects. Assist with art direction and photo acquisition and social media in order to reach more people, build a strong organization and inspire a smarter world while demonstrating CPM’s values of integrity, community, innovation and diversity.

 

Salary: $65,213 minimum - salary commensurate with experience

Seattle, Temporarily remote in WA State

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES 

  • Plan photo shoots, working with editors, reporters and photo subjects to capture images that tell powerful stories in conjunction with written stories 
  • Map out longer term photo-essays and special projects in conjunction with the Managing Editor
  • Research sources and enterprising story ideas from a range of subject areas 
  • Identify opportunities to include photographs with editorial projects to give them stronger visual appeal and impact
  • Follow established photo guidelines and ensure assets are delivered in a timely manner
  • Contribute still photography to other CPM brands when requested
  • Capture still images and occasional video for Crosscut’s daily and weekly news feed
  • Produce photo essays and special projects for publication at Crosscut and on various CPM platforms
  • Photograph occasional CPM events
  • Produce story pages for photo-driven stories on Crosscut’s website for self-generated work as well as freelancers
  • Upon request report and write news stories for Crosscut
  • Work with editors to identify and acquire photos and art to accompany news stories
  • Advise on ethical dilemmas related to photojournalism
  • Collaborate with audience engagement team, creating stills and images for Instagram, Facebook and other social media channels
  • Work with CPM legal department on various issues related to photography 
  • Secure and submit appropriate releases from photo and video subjects
  • Archive images and related caption and credit information to make them available to CPM staff present and future
  • Maintain and keep inventory of field gear and camera equipment
  • Manage photographic assets for live events, efficiently delivering to a large group of editorial and marketing stakeholders
  • Collaborate with other team members to foster a positive and productive culture and contribute toward the overall growth of the CPM

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates excellent content judgment; possess solid reporting skills; and facility with an array of multimedia storytelling tools and techniques
  • Ability to both self-generate creative projects and work with restrictions to meet very specific project/initiative needs
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold high ethical standards of journalism

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent experience strongly preferred 
  • Three years of photography/multimedia experience
  • Experience with Canon C100, C300, Canon 5D dSLR, Adobe CC/Premiere Pro strongly preferred
  • Production experience using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to regularly type on a keyboard 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or reliable means of transportation to meet requirements of the job
  • Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds unassisted
  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends, holidays and in inclement weather
